Just got back in Shanghai from Detroit, and one thing I felt quite differently during the trip this time than before was the feel of China’s economic influence finally reaching this American mid-west industrial hub city.

I made a trip to GongQing Forest Park in YangPu district this weekend with family to see their annual “Late Autumn Chrysanthemum Exhibition”. Chrysanthemum is one of the most traditionally respected and loved flowers in China, especially to the Chinese intellectual class, thanks to the long-history influence of Chinese Taoism. In fact, chrysanthemum, teamed up with chimonanthus praecox (winter plum blossom), orchid, and bamboo are called four gentleman plants for their excellent characters.
