Friday night party, subway, and the Haven House restaurant in Pudong (星期五派对,地铁,和浦东的避风塘 )

the house party location on HengSan road

It’s starting to get cold in Shanghai, especially in the midnight –not as much as it was in Detroit though. Last night Sue and I dropped Tanker to his Grandparents and went to a home party on Hengshan Road (衡山路) near Wulumuqi Road (乌鲁木齐路). We played table games, watched videos, and had many different drinks. It was lots of fun to hang out with friends, and we left just in time to catch the last subway train back to Pudong (浦东), except that we really had to run fast at the People’s Square (人民广场) underground connection to catch the line 2 (二号线) –whoever designed that one mile-long connection should be fired or even prosecuted. Day in and day out, tens of thousands of people have to march that one mile twice in order to connect between the line 1 and 2. The scene of the enormous human traffic moving in the tunnel during the rush hour was unbelievable the first time I saw it three years ago after spending 8 years in the States. The other worse subway connection I know of was the Port Authority underground connection in NYC, but that was designed probably over 80 years ago. I like the way Washington DC handled their connections: being vertical instead of spreading out. Well, if you really have to spread, at least make them close!

山氣日夕佳,飛鳥相與還。
此中有真意,欲辨已忘言。

I made a trip to GongQing Forest Park in YangPu district this weekend with family to see their annual “Late Autumn Chrysanthemum Exhibition”. Chrysanthemum is one of the most traditionally respected and loved flowers in China, especially to the Chinese intellectual class, thanks to the long-history influence of Chinese Taoism. In fact, chrysanthemum, teamed up with chimonanthus praecox (winter plum blossom), orchid, and bamboo are called four gentleman plants for their excellent characters.
